Pros and Cons

Pros

Large Storage Capacity (4TB)

The 4TB capacity is ample for surveillance setups, providing significant space to store extensive high-definition video footage from multiple cameras. This is ideal for DVR systems requiring continuous recording and long retention times.

High Cache Size (64MB)

With a 64MB cache, the drive offers enhanced read and write performance, improving data transfer speed. This feature is particularly beneficial for surveillance systems where quick access to stored footage is essential.

Fast 7200RPM Speed

The 7200RPM speed ensures faster data access and reduced latency, making it a good fit for real-time video recording and playback. This speed is generally above the standard for many surveillance hard drives, which often run at 5400 RPM.

Cons

Poor Durability (Lasted Only 6 Months)

Despite its promising specifications, the drive exhibited a significant issue with longevity. It failed after only six months of usage in a DVR surveillance system, far below the expected lifespan for a hard drive in this category. This is a critical flaw for a product intended for continuous operation in demanding environments.

Warranty Replacement Drive Also Failed

The warranty replacement process was straightforward, but the replacement drive experienced the same failure within six months of use. This indicates a potential issue with the product’s overall reliability or a broader quality control problem. Experiencing two failures in a row severely impacts confidence in the brand and product.

Mechanical Failure Symptoms

The drive exhibited clear signs of mechanical failure, including the inability to format and a sudden stop in recording. These issues indicate internal defects, such as faulty components or poor build quality, making the drive unreliable for critical surveillance tasks.

Customer Experiences

Positive Feedback

  • Simple Installation and Setup: One customer mentioned that the drive was easy to install and format, fitting perfectly into their Z440 computers for media storage. They appreciated the size, speed, and price, making it a good fit for their needs.
  • Reliable Performance: Another user, who always buys this brand, praised the drive for its excellent performance and reliability, giving it a five-star rating.

Negative Feedback

  • Short Lifespan: Several users reported that the drive failed after only six months of continuous use, which is a significant drawback for a product designed for 24/7 operation.
  • Replacement Drive Issues: A customer noted that even the warranty replacement drive failed within six months, indicating a potential quality control issue.
  • Unreadable Sectors: One user found that a large block of sectors at the end of the drive was unreadable, resulting in a diminished capacity of 3.6 TB instead of the advertised 4 TB.

Conclusion

The MDD 4TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5-Inch Internal Surveillance Hard Drive (Renewed) has promising specifications on paper, with its large capacity, high cache size, and fast 7200RPM speed seemingly tailored for DVR systems. However, its poor durability and repeated mechanical failures overshadow these benefits. Reliability is paramount for a product designed to handle continuous operation in surveillance environments, and this drive fell far behind expectations.

Given its repeated failures and lack of long-term stability, this product is 1 out of 5 stars. While it performs well initially, its lack of durability and recurring mechanical issues make it unreliable for surveillance applications. Improved quality control and enhanced durability are necessary for this product to be viable.

The drive works well

0 hard drives

I have 2, Z440 computers in which I added 1TB solid state M2.0 hard drives. I wanted something for media storage. This fit the bill perfectly for size, speed, function and price. Simple install, setup and format.

However, I've had other drives at work fine, but didn't last in this one has not been in long enough to see if it will last

This hard drive works fine in the application. However, I've had other drives at work fine, but didn't last in this one has not been in long enough to see if it will last. Assuming it last it will be a find hard drive, but I use these drives and surveillance systems which means they're in use 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 days a year therefore, I really won't be able to give it five STARZ Gerald has worked at least a year

After installation on my Windows PC, the drive capacity registered as 3

My order went smoothly as usual. After installation on my Windows PC, the drive capacity registered as 3.6 TB. OK odd but not really critical to me. Then I ran a surface check with Disk Genius and others. A big block of sectors at the end of the drive is unreadable explaining the diminished capacity. I am waiting for word from the reseller.

Like the first it came quickly from Amazon, installed and formatted it in no time at all

This is the second drive I bought. Like the first it came quickly from Amazon, installed and formatted it in no time at all. Bios and Operating system easily identified it accurately. Now we'll see if it last 3years per warranty.
