Many customers praised the NRICO 500GB Portable External Hard Drive for its affordability. One user mentioned, “I’m actually surprised by the quality of this product at this price. It’s well made and has a nice design.” Another reviewer highlighted its value, stating, “It’s a good deal for the price!”
For those on a tight budget, this hard drive offers a decent amount of storage without breaking the bank.
2. Compact and Portable Design
The slim and lightweight design of this hard drive makes it a favorite among users who need portability. One customer compared its size to “a pack of thin cigarettes,” emphasizing how easy it is to carry around. Whether you’re traveling or commuting, this hard drive fits effortlessly into your bag or pocket.
3. Plug-and-Play Convenience
The plug-and-play functionality is another standout feature. Customers appreciated that the hard drive is pre-formatted as exFAT, making it compatible with both Windows and Mac systems right out of the box. One user shared, “No software installation or reformatting required—just plug it in and start storing.”
4. Decent Performance for the Price
While it’s not the fastest hard drive on the market, many users found its performance satisfactory for everyday use. One reviewer noted, “Copied all my data accurately. Very decent product for not a lot of money.”
Cons: Areas for Improvement
1. Build Quality Concerns
Despite its sleek design, some customers expressed concerns about the build quality. One user criticized the “cheap plastic” bottom, while another mentioned that the hard drive feels “pretty light,” which could indicate a lack of durability.
Additionally, the USB port and cable received mixed reviews. One reviewer described the cable as “ancient,” adding that it “feels like it’s going to push the port inside every time you plug it in.”
2. Limited Longevity
Several users reported that the hard drive stopped working after a couple of years. One customer shared, “Stopped working after about 2 years, but hey, c’est la vie.” While this might be acceptable for a budget product, it’s worth considering if you’re looking for a long-term storage solution.
3. Slow Transfer Speeds
A few customers were disappointed with the transfer speeds. One reviewer bluntly stated, “The download speeds are HORRENDOUS.” If you frequently transfer large files, this might not be the best option for you.
4. Not Ideal for Heavy Use
While the NRICO 500GB Portable External Hard Drive works well for basic storage needs, it may not be suitable for more demanding tasks. One user advised, “Do not buy this product unless you’re really hard-pressed for storage or need something short-term.”
Final Thoughts
The NRICO 500GB Portable External Hard Drive is a mixed bag. On one hand, it offers an affordable, compact, and functional storage solution for casual users. Its plug-and-play convenience and decent performance make it a solid choice for students, professionals, and gamers who need extra storage on a budget.
On the other hand, concerns about build quality, longevity, and transfer speeds may deter those looking for a more robust and long-term storage solution.
Final Verdict
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly external hard drive for light use, the NRICO 500GB Portable External Hard Drive is worth considering. However, if you need faster speeds, better durability, or a long-term storage solution, you might want to invest in a higher-end model.
For its price, the NRICO hard drive delivers decent value, but it’s important to manage your expectations. As one customer aptly put it, “It’s fine.”

Comments from Amazon:
Fast delivery, well packaged. I'm actually surprised by the quality of this product at this price, well made and nice design. Seems to be working fine.
This was an inexpensive external hard drive. I don't need a whole ton of storage but a rather moderate amount. It's no larger than a pack of thin cigarettes, copied all my data accurately. very decent product for not a lot of money
Stopped working after about 2 years, but hey, c'est la vie. Doesn't get hot easy, works pretty well considering the price.
It's a good deal for the price!
Do not buy this product unless you’re really hard pressed for storage or need something shorterm. Build quality sucks, the bottom is some cheap plastic and it’s pretty light. The cable and port are ancient, I mean I’m talking before the “mini usb” and it feels like it’s going to push the port inside everytime you plug it in. Im a lil bit broke at the moment, so this will do for the time being, I mean it works but at what cost, 20 bucks. but to all the uneducated mothers who’re going to try and buy this for their children’s Xbox or gaming pc and such, invest in a sandisk external ssd, it has much better build quality and will last way longer than this The download speeds are HORRENDOUS
Dooes what it says. It is fine.
Works great! I bought this to use with my laser and computer to store my digital files. Lots of memory at good price. Very pleased!
