Pros and Cons: What Customers Are Saying
Performance: Blazing-Fast Speeds
One of the standout features of the ORICO 1TB External SSD is its speed. Customers have praised its ability to handle large file transfers with ease. One user reported sustained write speeds of 296MB/s and read speeds of 292MB/s when connected via USB-C. This makes it ideal for tasks like transferring large video files, backing up data, or even running games directly from the drive.
Another customer highlighted its performance for gaming: “My son's main PC disk was filling up, so I wanted a speedy external drive for his games. This drive came through with blazing-fast speeds, allowing him to load textures and game files in real-time.”
However, it’s worth noting that to achieve these speeds, your device must support USB 3.1 (10Gbps). If you’re using an older USB 2.0 or 5Gbps port, you won’t get the full benefit of this drive.
Build Quality: Durable but Not Perfect
The ORICO SSD is built with an aluminum alloy casing, which provides excellent protection against drops and dust. Many users appreciate its rugged design, especially for on-the-go use. One reviewer compared it to their first hard drive, which was bulky and heavy, saying, “This drive is small enough to fit in your pocket and lightweight, making it incredibly convenient.”
However, some customers have pointed out that the construction material dents easily, which could be a concern for those who frequently travel with the drive. Additionally, the hanging hole design, while innovative, was criticized for being non-functional by some users.
Usability: Plug-and-Play Simplicity
The ORICO SSD is designed for ease of use, with a 2-in-1 USB C&A cable that ensures compatibility with a wide range of devices. Customers have praised its plug-and-play functionality, making it accessible even for non-tech-savvy users.
One reviewer shared their experience: “Transferring all my important documents was as easy as plugging in a USB drive. It’s simple, fast, and reliable.”
However, a few users mentioned that the connector feels fragile, which could be a potential point of failure over time.
Heat Management: Cool Under Pressure
Heat management is a common concern with high-speed SSDs, but the ORICO SSD seems to handle it well. Customers have noted that while the drive gets warm during sustained use, it never becomes uncomfortably hot. One user even said, “This thing’s awesome. It doesn’t even really get hot at all.”
Final Verdict: Is the ORICO 1TB External SSD Worth It?
Strengths:
- Exceptional Speed
Perfect for large file transfers, gaming, and backups. - Portable Design
Compact and lightweight, ideal for on-the-go use. - Durable Build
Aluminum alloy casing provides excellent protection. - Wide Compatibility
Works with a variety of devices and operating systems.
Weaknesses:
- Fragile Connector
Some users reported concerns about the durability of the connector. - Non-Functional Hanging Hole

The ORICO 1TB External SSD is a solid choice for anyone in need of fast, reliable, and portable storage. Its impressive speeds, durable build, and wide compatibility make it a versatile tool for professionals, gamers, and casual users alike. While it has a few minor drawbacks, such as the fragile connector and non-functional hanging hole, these are outweighed by its overall performance and convenience.
If you’re looking for an external SSD that delivers on speed and reliability, the ORICO 1TB External SSD is definitely worth considering. Just make sure your device supports USB 3.1 to take full advantage of its capabilities.

Comments from Amazon:
Fast, convenient and works well
I remember my first hard drive was big and bulky, cost an arm and leg, weighed my backpack down like a brick, and just a fraction of the capacity of this thing. While it’s not tiny like a small usb drive, it’s small enough to stick into your pants pocket. I was able to transfer all my important old docs onto this drive and it was just as easy as a little USB drive, just plug and play.
My son's main PC disk was filling up so I wanted to get him a good, speedy external drive that he could use for his games. It had to be quick enough to be able to load current gen game files, likes textures, etc. in real-time and pretty quickly. This drive came through. As you can see from the screenshot, speeds are blazing fast for an external drive, but here's the thing to keep in mind: Be sure your USB port is a USB 3.1 standard (current for 2024). And since the naming conventions have changed a gazillion times for USB, just be sure it has a 10 next to it for 10Gbps speeds. If you're using a 5Gbps port or -- gasp! -- USB 2.0 port, you will not get the full benefit of this drive. However, if you use the drive as intended, expect a consistent, dependable drive for games, photos, movies or whatever you need to store on it.
It's simple Pro -cost/benefit -reliability - plug and play - does not heat up -size - Transfer speed -compatibility I don't like it - the connector is fragile - the carrying hole is not functional - Construction material dents easily
I initially had a connection issue with the drive, but the manufacturer has good customer service and took care of it, so you can buy with confidence. Other than that it's a nice compact drive that's pretty fast.
This thing's awesome It doesn't even really get hot at all. It's super fast.
This drive performs well. When being tested with a full disk write of non-compressed individual files it kept up a sustained write rate of about 296 Mbytes/s and a read rate rate of 292 Mbytes/s while connected via USB-C The drive got a bit warm, but not hot. It is a big unit, the product picture showing it about the length of an average hand is correct. If you need to copy a large amount of files or a bunch of big files, this drive will perform very well in sustained usage.
