But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the details based on real customer experiences.
Pros and Cons: What Customers Are Saying
Performance: Blazing Fast Speeds
One of the most praised aspects of the OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD is its performance. Customers have reported noticeable speed improvements after upgrading their systems.
- "I don’t think my computer (Late 2012 Mac Mini) has ever run this fast," shared one user. Another customer echoed this sentiment, stating that their MacBook Pro now runs "blazingly fast" compared to its previous state.
- The SSD’s real-world speeds of up to 500MB/s ensure quick boot times, faster file transfers, and near-instantaneous system responsiveness.
However, some users noted that the SSD’s performance is still limited by other hardware components, such as the graphics card and processor. For example, one reviewer mentioned that their MacBook Pro’s Intel HD graphics card and Intel Core i5 processor remain bottlenecks, even with the SSD upgrade.
Ease of Installation: Quick and Simple
Another standout feature is the SSD’s ease of installation. Many customers appreciated how straightforward it was to replace their old drives with the OWC Mercury Electra 6G.
- "Quick, simple, easy to install," said one satisfied user. Another reviewer described the installation process as "not as involved as the kits for the iMacs," making it accessible even for those with limited technical expertise.
- The SSD’s 7mm height ensures compatibility with a wide range of devices, including older MacBook Pros and Mac Minis.
Durability and Reliability: Built to Last
Durability is a key selling point for the OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD. Its no-moving-parts design ensures a quiet, cool, and rugged storage experience, which customers have found to be highly reliable.
- "This is quite a SOLID state drive if you know what I mean!" exclaimed one reviewer, emphasizing the drive’s robust build quality.
- Features like global wear leveling, static data refresh technology, and built-in hardware ECC contribute to the SSD’s longevity, ensuring balanced data distribution and efficient free space management.
However, some users expressed concerns about the 3-year limited warranty, wishing it were longer for added peace of mind.
Compatibility: Versatile and Flexible
The OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD is compatible with Mac, PC, and drive enclosures that support 2.5-inch SATA drives. This versatility makes it a great choice for a variety of use cases.
- One user highlighted the SSD’s ability to support external and bootable operating systems, allowing them to boot up in whatever OS they needed at the moment.
- Another customer praised the drive’s compatibility with Time Machine backups and RAID configurations, making it a reliable option for data backup and storage solutions.
Value for Money: Worth the Investment
While SSDs generally cost more than traditional hard drives, customers agree that the OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD offers excellent value for money.
- "SSDs cost more than spinners because they are much faster. Migrating one system to another system makes it totally worth it," explained one reviewer.
- Another user described the upgrade as the "best decision I ever made," emphasizing the SSD’s ability to extend the lifespan of their older Mac Mini.

Comments from Amazon:
Used for an old MBP. Not as involved as the kits for the iMac's Quick, simple, easy to install.
In combination with 2x 8GB DDR3L RAM cards by Timetec, this good old Macbook pro is running 'blazingly fast' compared to how it was. Hope it lasts forever. (Its only limitation is, of course, the graphics card (Intel HD) and processor (Intel Core i5) which are fixed. In any case, now with the new SSD and boasting in terms of RAM, managed to also install on it a patched version of Monterey (using OpenCore), which runs well enough for average use.
Thoroughly justifies external and bootable operating systems for transformable platform systems. Boot up in whatever operating system you so desire at the moment for whatever need you may have. Also great for backup plans such as Time Machine or any RAID configuration you may have. SSDs cost more than spinners because they are much faster. Migrating one system to another system makes it totally worth it.
This is quite a SOLID state drive if you know what i mean! been using it for a while and it installed perfectly easy with no issues, and ive put a few months heavy use on it and all seems great, would recommend this drive.
Awesome SSD. I replaced the hard drive in my 2010 MacBook Pro with this and it is working very well. I dont use my computer for gaming. Just for school. And it gets the job done just fine
I don’t think my computer (Late 2012 Mac Mini) has ever run this fast. I swapped out the hard drive for this one and also installed a second as it can take dual drives. Best decision I ever made.
My old one of about 6 years was having some issues on my Mac with waking up or freezing. I replaced it with this upgraded model and no more problems. I have been buying OWC Mercury drives for years for both Mac and Windows systems, never a problem.
