Pros and Cons: What Customers Are Saying

Performance and Reliability

One of the most praised aspects of the WD Purple Pro is its exceptional performance under continuous workloads. Customers have noted that it handles multiple camera streams effortlessly, even in 24/7 recording setups. One reviewer shared their experience with a Unifi setup, stating that upgrading to this drive resolved all their issues with lagging footage and live view delays. They now enjoy smooth scrubbing and reliable playback, even when accessing footage remotely via the Unifi Protect app.

Another user highlighted the drive's compatibility with Blue Iris 5 Surveillance Software, mentioning that it writes data quickly and efficiently. While they noted that the drive is audible during operation, it’s not loud enough to be disruptive.

Durability and Build Quality

The tarnish-resistant components and enterprise-class reliability of the WD Purple Pro make it a standout choice for demanding environments. A customer using two of these drives in a HikVision system reported zero issues after almost a year of continuous operation. They did mention slight vibrations in their lightweight NVR chassis but attributed this to the chassis itself rather than the drive.

However, not all experiences have been positive. One user reported that their 10TB drive failed after just a few months of use in a UDM Pro system. This isolated incident highlights the importance of ensuring proper installation and compatibility with your specific setup.

Storage Capacity and AI Optimization

The 10TB capacity is a major selling point for users with extensive surveillance needs. One reviewer using 16 4K IP cameras found the drive to be a perfect fit, providing ample storage for high-resolution footage. The AllFrame AI technology also received praise for its ability to reduce frame loss and enhance video playback, making it ideal for systems integrating AI analytics.

Usability and Setup

While the drive itself performs admirably, some customers noted minor inconveniences during setup. A few reviewers mentioned that the mounting screws and quick install guide were missing from the package, despite being listed as included. Additionally, the drive does not come with SATA data or power cables, so users need to ensure they have these components on hand or purchase them separately.

On the bright side, installation is generally straightforward. One user shared that their drive automatically formatted and initialized upon installation in a SureVision NVR, making the setup process hassle-free.

Noise and Heat Management

The WD Purple Pro is known for its quiet operation, even under heavy use. Multiple reviewers commented on how silent the drive is, with one user stating they couldn’t hear it at all in their Annke NVR. Heat management is also a strong point, with the drive maintaining low temperatures even during extended recording sessions.

Final Verdict: Is the WD Purple Pro Worth It?

The Western Digital 10TB WD Purple Pro Surveillance Internal Hard Drive is a top-tier choice for anyone in need of reliable, high-capacity storage for surveillance systems. Its AllFrame AI technology, 550TB/year workload rating, and enterprise-class durability make it a standout option for both commercial and residential setups.

Strengths:

  • Exceptional performance under continuous workloads.
  • Ample storage capacity for high-resolution footage.
  • Quiet operation and efficient heat management.
  • Optimized for AI-enabled surveillance systems.

Weaknesses:

  • Some users reported missing accessories (mounting screws, quick install guide).
  • SATA data and power cables not included.
  • Isolated reports of drive failure after a few months.

Conclusion

Overall, the WD Purple Pro 10TB is a reliable and high-performing hard drive that lives up to its promises. While there are minor drawbacks, such as missing accessories and the occasional isolated failure, the drive’s strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. If you’re looking for a durable, high-capacity storage solution for your surveillance system, the WD Purple Pro is an excellent investment. Just make sure to double-check your setup requirements and have the necessary cables on hand for a smooth installation process.

I was using the Cloud Key Gen 2+ with the 1Tb included HD, but I was having alot of issues with pulling up footage, live views, lagging, etc, on the gen2+

I have a Unifi setup, with 4 WiFi cameras. I was using the Cloud Key Gen 2+ with the 1Tb included HD, but I was having alot of issues with pulling up footage, live views, lagging, etc, on the gen2+. But now I upgraded my setup to a Dream Machine Pro SE, with a Unifi WiFi 6 Pro Access Point, with this 12TB WD surveillance drive, and it works FLAWLESSLY! Make sure you buy a surveillance grade HD, other HDs like for a PC gamer build, they will fail within a few months, believe me, it’s happened to me. I get 120 days of continuous storage with my 4 WiFi cameras. All my issues were resolved! No lag, scrubbing is smooth and easy, live views on my local WiFi and on 5G on my iPhone using the Unifi protect app all work great now! It’s a FAR more reliable setup and I would encourage anyone who wants to use Unifi to go this route for your home security cameras.

 Writes fast

Purchased to install in new computer running Blue Iris 5 Surveillance Software. Writes fast. Good Price for an 8TB Surveillance Drive. You can certainly hear it when it's writing to the drive, but not so loud as to be an annoyance. Would have preferred PCIe Gen5 NVMe M.2 SSD, but that would have broke the bank for 8TB! It's only being used for Achieved clips of footage.

I have the system recording 24/7

I use 2 of these in a low-end HikVision system for my home. I have the system recording 24/7....not motion-triggered. After almost a year, zero issues. There is some slight vibration in a light weight NVR chassis, but that could easily be the chassis being slightly out of square, and really shouldn't count against the drives.

It automatically formatted and initialized upon powering-up, went smoothly with no problems

I received the 12TB WD purple internal hard drive, installed it, powered-up my SureVision NVR. It automatically formatted and initialized upon powering-up, went smoothly with no problems. I am using this with 16 4K (8 megapixel) IP cameras, so this internal hard drive was definitely needed. It is working great so far which is worth a 5-star rating; however, I am giving it a 4-star overall rating because the "What's in the box" says it includes "Mounting Screws, Quick Install Guide." These 2 items were missing in the box. Even though the box was securely sealed, only the hard drive was enclosed in the sealed box. Also, be aware that the SATA data cable and power cable are not included with this item. You will need to already have your own, or purchase them separately. This hard drive is running smoothly and quietly in my NVR 24/7.

Hd is super quiet i cannot here it

I installed this hd in a annke nvr works as it should. Hd is super quiet i cannot here it

10TB would give me like several months of lookback

Got this for the UDM Pro system to record video footage. 10TB would give me like several months of lookback..well it only lasted a few months and then stopped working. Avoid it. I will not get WD hard drives again.
