This NVMe PCIe Gen3x4 internal solid-state drive offers read speeds of up to 2150MB/s and write speeds of up to 1650MB/s, making it a powerhouse for faster boot times, quicker application loading, and seamless multitasking. Designed specifically for MacBook Pro A1708 models, this SSD is packed with features like built-in encryption, shock resistance, and energy efficiency. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the pros and cons based on real customer experiences.

Pros: What Customers Love About the Dogfish 512GB SSD

1. Blazing-Fast Performance

One of the most praised aspects of the Dogfish SSD is its speed. Customers have reported significant improvements in their MacBook’s performance after installation. One user mentioned, "It works without issues and significantly improved my MacBook's speeds." Another customer shared that their 10-year-old Thinkpad now boots up in under 4 seconds, compared to the 25 seconds it took with their old SanDisk drive. For those with older laptops, this SSD has been a lifesaver, breathing new life into aging devices.

2. Reliability and Durability

Many users have highlighted the reliability of the Dogfish SSD. One reviewer stated, "It has been reliable for many months now... All data from point of initial use to now has always been able to be reliably and consistently accessed at wonderfully high speed." The SSD’s shock-resistant and vibration-proof design ensures long-lasting performance, making it a dependable choice for daily use.

3. Easy Installation

The Dogfish SSD comes with two screwdrivers, making the installation process straightforward. A satisfied customer shared, "It is a great drive. Easy to install and worked like a charm." Even for those who aren’t tech-savvy, the included manual and online guides make the upgrade process hassle-free.

4. Affordable Price

The Dogfish SSD offers excellent value for money. One reviewer called it a "low-cost option that is a great value," while another mentioned that it was cheaper than buying a new laptop. For those on a budget, this SSD provides a cost-effective way to upgrade their device without breaking the bank.

Cons: Areas Where the Dogfish SSD Falls Short

1. Potential Quality Control Issues

While most customers have had positive experiences, there have been a few reports of defective drives. One user shared a frustrating experience: "All was good for about two or three weeks. Then the drive locked... and when I contacted the vendor to get a replacement, he said I needed to buy a new one and send him my old drive." This raises concerns about the company’s customer service and quality control processes.

2. Odd Packaging and Branding

Some customers found the packaging and branding to be a bit unusual. One reviewer noted, "Their packaging contains some odd things... 'Win with fast and wisdom' in English but the Chinese writing seems to suggest something more bold." While this doesn’t affect the performance of the SSD, it might leave some users feeling uncertain about the brand.

3. Limited Compatibility

The Dogfish SSD is specifically designed for MacBook Pro A1708 (2016-2017 Non-Touch Bar) models. While this ensures optimal performance for these devices, it limits its usability for other laptops or MacBook models. Make sure to double-check compatibility before purchasing.

Final Thoughts: Is the Dogfish 512GB SSD Worth It?

The Dogfish 512GB SSD is an excellent choice for MacBook Pro A1708 users looking to upgrade their device’s performance. Its high-speed performance, reliability, and affordability make it a standout option in the crowded SSD market. However, potential quality control issues and limited compatibility are factors to consider before making a purchase.

Final Verdict:

If you own a MacBook Pro A1708 (2016-2017 Non-Touch Bar) and want to breathe new life into your device, the Dogfish 512GB SSD is a solid investment. Just be sure to back up your data and double-check compatibility to avoid any hiccups. For most users, this SSD delivers on its promises, offering a significant performance boost at an affordable price.

It works without issues and significantly improved my macbook's speeds

I installed mine as soon as it arrived. It works without issues and significantly improved my macbook's speeds

Has been reliable for many months now

Excellent price, excellent speed and quality. Has been reliable for many months now... To the point that it has become my " stable and reliable SSD" in my goto laptop, hosting windows while leaving the drab work to the Samsung SSD I used to use as the primary. This one has never so much as flipped a single bit on me. All data from point of initial use to now has always been able to be reliably and consistently accessed at wonderfully high speed. I will search this particular brand out from here on, as spending more for anything else would just be, stupid.

After reading the reviews on this drive it gave me hope on giving my notebook some performance boot

This SSD has brought new life to an almost 8 year old Samsung 700T notebook. After reading the reviews on this drive it gave me hope on giving my notebook some performance boot. So I replaced my SanDisk orgain drive. Complete OS reload took less than 10 minutes. And from power on to login is under 4 seconds when it would take about 25 with the original SanDisk drive.

My 10 year old Thinkpad is now complete

Thanks Dogfish. My 10 year old Thinkpad is now complete. The drive works great and came at an excellent price. The manufacture is a bit odd though. I know it is a company that most people have heard of (unless you have a friend who is Chinese and buys a lot of things that I wouldn't buy; as every other product they sell prior to these were not marketed directly to the U.S.). So the product works but if you can read Mandarin or understand "pictorial characters" (it is like Chinese writing for people there who can't read; something like that) their packaging contains some odd things. Examples: "Win with fast and wisdom" in English but the Chinese writing seems to suggest something more bold. Anyway good drive, good price, along with a odd feeling if you have the above friend translate it. (Language info from my Chinese neighbor of 30 years; edited by best friend who is actually an editor)

I have a smaller version of this in daily use for nearly 2 years w/ zero issues

This low cost option is a great value. I have a smaller version of this in daily use for nearly 2 years w/ zero issues. When it came time to do a clean install I decided to increase storage and get this new drive.

Easy to install and worked like a charm

It is a great drive. Easy to install and worked like a charm. Old hard drive died from my 4 year old laptop. Ordered this since it was cheaper than buying a new laptop. Got a Windows 10 thumb drive and it went smoothly. Comes with screws to hold it down in place and booted up without an issue.

All was good for about two or three weeks

BEWARE!!! I was super excited about getting a SSD for my gaming rig. All was good for about two or three weeks. Then the drive locked (wouldn’t allow me to save files or delete items from the drive, believe me...I tried everything) and when I contacted the vendor to get a replacement he said I needed to buy a new one and send him my old drive. First off, I’m not sending a drive that has the license information of my OS, and all software installed to some random person. Secondly, due to a factory defect the drive locked and is garbage. Don’t buy these if you value your personal information.
