Should be zero stars. Do not purchase these harddrives. I purchased in June and became ill. I was unable to open or install until February. This is the absolute worst drive. Horrible packaging, will not even power up. wasted money. Do not buy.

I've been buying 8GB USB backup drives for seemingly forever. We go through about 6 a year. I was buying them when they were on sale at the local Costco, but they've stopped carrying them. There are other suppliers of course, but it seems the costs of those drives has gone up a lot since the last batch I bought. So the search started for alternatives. For the most part, the duty is a year of light backup use, then they get moved to offline archive (read: stored in a fireproof cabinet) until/unless some of the archived data is needed. Seems like the perfect job for this recycled drive. So I bought one to try in parallel service before changing all of them. First, the drive arrived packaged well, and is cosmetically perfect. Other reviewers have reported some minor scratching or tool marks from prior service. This example has none. Not even a fingerprint. It's in a sealed antistatic bag. Had I not known that it's a recycled/refurbished drive, it could easily pass as brand new based on first impression. Powering it on was painless, with no need to play with power supply pins to avoid any inhibits that some others have mentioned. I suspect that's a 'feature' totally dependent on the particular power supply you have. Reading the stored stats from the drive reveal that it's been power cycled less than 20 times, and the service hours are well short of 50% MTBF, both indicators that this will be good in our service. Limited by the USB interface to the workstations, the read and write speeds aren't stellar. No fault of the drives of course, and based on the duty here (overnight incremental backups) those aren't really important to us. The drive was quickly identified when connected, and was scrubbed again before formatting. The drive itself is very quiet even just sitting exposed on a desktop mat during those operations. I anticipate rotating this drive into service in about a month. Based on our current arching rate, this 12TB drive should last a full year in service before it goes to storage. I'll call this demo a success for us if there are no issues during that time. Again, this is hardly a tough duty especially for an enterprise-class drive. The review will be updated if problems are discovered during the demo period. ----- Yes, I am aware that the local workstation archive method is not what others might recommend. Things would be faster and certainly more physically secure using a NAS array with ethernet. The actual service requirements make that tough. So each workstation has its own archive. I'm winding the business down and firing clients as fast as we can. Less than two active years to go, plus seven years records retention after the lights go off.
