ORICO USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure Review: A Reliable Storage Solution?

Upgrade your storage setup with the ORICO USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure, a versatile and user-friendly solution for both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs. With support for drives up to 20TB, this enclosure is designed to meet the needs of professionals and casual users alike. Its USB 3.0 interface ensures fast data transfer speeds, while the tool-free installation makes it accessible even for beginners. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the pros and cons based on real customer experiences.

Pros and Cons: What Customers Are Saying

Ease of Use and Installation

One of the standout features of the ORICO enclosure is its tool-free design. Customers rave about how easy it is to set up. One reviewer mentioned, "This enclosure works perfectly and was ready to go in less than a minute. It's a tool-less design so all you really have to do is slide off the cover, pop in your drive, and close it up." The included foam pads help secure the drive, preventing any rattling or movement inside the enclosure.

However, some users noted that the lid feels a bit too easy to slide off, which could be a concern for those who frequently move their drives around. Despite this, the enclosure holds up well during normal use, and the lid doesn’t come off unless intentionally slid out.

Performance and Speed

The USB 3.0 interface and UASP acceleration deliver impressive speeds, with one user reporting read speeds of 150 MB/s, which is close to the drive’s native SATA performance. Another reviewer praised the enclosure for its compatibility with USB-C, making it a future-proof choice for modern devices.

However, some users experienced speed drops after prolonged use, though it’s unclear whether this is due to the enclosure or the drive itself. Additionally, the instant power-off feature when pressing the power button was a point of frustration for some. As one reviewer noted, "Pressing the power button will cause the drive to immediately power off without confirmation. It doesn't unmount or wait until it's finished writing."

Durability and Build Quality

The enclosure is built with rugged ABS material and features an anti-shock sponge to protect your drive. Customers appreciate its heat-resistant and drop-proof design, which ensures the safety of their data. One user mentioned, "The top of the drive (with the brand name and logo) is made of metal to disperse heat more efficiently."

On the flip side, some users reported durability issues over time. One reviewer shared that the enclosure started randomly disconnecting after a month of use, which is concerning for those relying on it for critical backups. Fortunately, the seller offered a replacement, and the new unit worked flawlessly.

Compatibility and Versatility

The ORICO enclosure shines in its wide compatibility, supporting Windows, Mac, Linux, and Unix systems. It’s also compatible with both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives, making it a versatile choice for various storage needs. One user successfully used it to recover data from an old, non-booting hard drive, stating, "It far exceeded my expectations. The dead drive appeared instantly in the file explorer."

However, the manual included in the package received mixed reviews. Some found it difficult to read due to its small font size and approximate English translations. While the installation process is intuitive for most, beginners might find the manual less helpful.

Customer Support and Warranty

ORICO’s customer support received praise from users who encountered issues. One reviewer shared, "The seller contacted me and offered to either replace this enclosure or refund my money. I opted for a replacement, and the new unit has been working perfectly." This level of support adds value to the product, especially for those using it for critical data storage.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?

The ORICO USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure is a solid choice for anyone looking to upgrade their storage setup. Its easy installation, fast transfer speeds, and wide compatibility make it a versatile and reliable option. However, the lid design and instant power-off feature could use some improvements. Additionally, while most users had a positive experience, the occasional durability issue is something to keep in mind.

Who Should Buy It?

  • Casual Users
If you’re looking for an affordable and easy-to-use enclosure for backups or data recovery, this is a great option.
  • Professionals
With support for drives up to 20TB, it’s ideal for large-scale storage needs.
  • Tech Enthusiasts
The USB-C compatibility and UASP acceleration make it a future-proof choice.

Who Might Want to Look Elsewhere?

  • Critical Data Users
If you’re storing mission-critical data, consider a more premium enclosure with better durability.
  • Beginners
While the tool-free design is beginner-friendly, the lack of a detailed manual might be a drawback.

In conclusion, the ORICO USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure offers excellent value for its price. Despite a few minor flaws, it delivers on performance, ease of use, and versatility. If you’re in the market for a reliable storage solution, this enclosure is definitely worth considering.

It's a tool-less design so all you really have to do is slide off the cover, pop in your drive, and close it up

This enclosure works perfectly and was ready to go in less than a minute. It's a tool-less design so all you really have to do is slide off the cover, pop in your drive, and close it up. My drive sat a bit loose in the enclosure, but they provide two foam pads (one thick, one thin) to make the fit more snug. I stuck the thick pad down on the lid towards the end away from the ports, and it immediately stopped any rattling and clunking when moving it around. The lid feels a bit too easy to slide off, which isn't terribly confidence inspiring. However it still seems to hold well even if the latch disengages. I wasn't able to feel much wiggle room when I pulled on the cover, you have to slide it all the way out for it to come off. For the price, I'll give it a pass on this point. In the enclosure my hard drive mounts like any other removable storage, and it fully supports SMART. The drive supports USB 3 over its USB-C port, which is more than sufficient for my mechanical drive. Using the included USB-A to USB-C cable, I hit about 150 MB/s read speeds, which is pretty close to the drive's performance over SATA. I didn't bother to test write speeds since it's an SMR drive, so it would be limited by the drive itself. I noticed read speeds dropping after a few benchmarks, though I'm not sure whether that's because of the enclosure or the drive itself. The drive will even go into standby after a period of inactivity, just like it did when I had it in my desktop. Do note that pressing the power button will cause the drive to immediately power off without confirmation. It doesn't unmount or wait until it's finished writing, it will instantly cut power to the drive. I wished it would've taken at least a long press to power off. To summarize, I'm pretty happy with this drive, and it seems to be one of the few nicer enclosures that supports USB-C.

 Easy to install

Great drive enclosure. Easy to install. Works as advertised. Would definitely buy again.

After that it started randomly disconnecting from the computer for 10-15 seconds, then it will reconnect

This enclosure worked fine for about a month. After that it started randomly disconnecting from the computer for 10-15 seconds, then it will reconnect. This happens about every 2-3 hours. As I use this drive for scheduled backups it is unacceptable for it to be disconnecting. I have tried 3 different USB-C cables, and it exhibits the same behavior no matter what I do. If the seller is willing to replace it I will update this review. If not, I would not recommend using it for data critical purposes. Edited: The seller contacted me and offered to either replace this enclosure or refund my money. As I have had their products before and have generally had good luck with them I opted for a replacement. In the week since it has come and been installed I have had no further issues with this enclosure. It's easy to install the drive and it's working fine. I have a 16TB HDD installed in it and works well with it. Thanks to the seller for making this right.

Among the different products on this page, this review is for the Orico single hard drive enclosure - Model 3588 USB3.0 (UAB 3.0 & SATA). I received a sample for test and evaluation. These caddies have become essential accessories as people upgrade computers on a regular basis. The new pc usually comes with a new internal hard drive, but it would be a waste to scrap your previous one along with the old tower. So the solution is to extract your old drive and slip it into a case like this one, which allows you to turn any 3.5” internal SATA hard drive into a portable external drive for just the cost of the enclosure. This gives you additional storage for backups, and it is also invaluable to retrieve data in case of computer failure. Included in the package was the drive enclosure, a USB cable (1 m long), a power cord (1.5 m) with 12V adapter for direct connection to a wall outlet , a foam pad if needed to stabilize the drive, and a manual in English. The manual could be better, both in content and presentation. The writing is tiny and I had to scan and enlarge each page, but it does contain adequate instructions in approximate English. However, if you've used one before, installation is intuitive. Just remember to do the safe-remove when you want to disconnect it. This is one of the easiest models I have come across. No tools are needed. The plastic casing opens by sliding the bottom sideways, you then align the contacts and push the drive home. For thinner drives you can use the foam provided (I did not use it). You then close it back up, connect the enclosure to your new pc (or laptop) with the supplied cables and switch on. A LED light flashes red and when it turns steady blue, you are ready to access your new external drive in the usual way. The top of the drive (with the brand name and logo) is made of metal to disperse heat more efficiently. If you have a USB 3.0 port (blue), you can take advantage of its fastest speed, but it is also retro-compatible to older standards. My pc does not have 3.0 ports available, so the read-write speeds I'm getting are adequate but not ground-shaking. Hoever, used with the laptop's 3.0 port, everything gets much faster. I have used this caddy to back up 770 GB of data onto a WD Blue hard drive in preparation for upgrading to Win 10. It made the whole thing much less traumatic and now I have a very useful 1 TB external drive where I store my weekly backups. Heat dissipation is very good, although the drive does feel warm but comparable to similar products. So far the product is performing impeccably.

Good price, works well.

Como descrito no anúncio, capa de HD maravilhosa, se faz muito útil para proteção realmente, de material bem rígido e bom! Indico muito o produto.

I was rather sceptical that this External Hard Drive Enclosure would work but I took a chance and ordered it, mainly based on the reasonable price

I needed to recover a large amount of files from an old hard drive that refused to boot up, despite my best efforts. I was rather sceptical that this External Hard Drive Enclosure would work but I took a chance and ordered it, mainly based on the reasonable price. I have to say, it far exceeded my expectations. It was extremely easy to use and the dead drive appeared instantly in the file explorer. I was able to transfer all the files I needed from the old drive to my other PC in less than 5 minutes.
