If you’re a PlayStation 5 owner, you’ve probably already run into the dreaded storage issue. With modern games often exceeding 80GB or more, the PS5’s built-in storage fills up fast. Enter the Seagate Game Drive for PS5 5TB External HDD, a sleek, officially licensed storage solution designed to expand your gaming library. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the details, pros, and cons based on real customer experiences.
Product Overview
The Seagate Game Drive for PS5 5TB External HDD is a USB 3.0 external hard drive that offers a whopping 5TB of storage. Officially licensed by PlayStation, it’s designed to work seamlessly with both PS5 and PS4 consoles. The drive features a blue LED light that adds a stylish touch to your gaming setup, and its lightweight, portable design makes it easy to carry your entire game library wherever you go. With plug-and-play installation, setting it up is a breeze, and the USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) connectivity ensures fast data transfer speeds.
But how does it perform in real-world use? Let’s break it down.
Pros and Cons: What Gamers Are Saying
1. Storage Capacity: A Game-Changer
The 5TB storage capacity is undoubtedly the star of the show. Customers rave about how it solves their storage woes, allowing them to store 60+ PS5 games or 100+ PS4 games. One reviewer noted, “I can finally store all my games and still have room to spare! The 5TB capacity is more than enough for my growing library.” Another added, “I’ve got all my PS5 games on here, plus some PS4 games, and I’ve still got tons of space left over.”
However, it’s important to note that PS5 games cannot be played directly from the external drive. They must be transferred back to the console’s internal storage to play. This limitation has frustrated some users, with one reviewer stating, “The whole purpose of this purchase was to avoid deleting games, but I still have to move them back and forth.”
2. Ease of Use and Setup
The plug-and-play functionality is a major plus. Customers appreciate how easy it is to set up, with one reviewer saying, “Works great right out of the package. Easy install and no issues.” Another added, “The setup was a breeze, just plug it in and go!” The USB 3.0 connectivity also ensures fast transfer speeds, making it quick to move games between the drive and the console.
However, some users have reported issues with the PS5 not recognizing the drive. One frustrated reviewer wrote, “The PS5 itself won’t recognize that the extended storage is connected to it. Needless to say, it was a waste of $160+.” While this seems to be a rare issue, it’s worth considering before purchasing.
3. Design and Build Quality
The sleek design and blue LED lighting have won over many gamers. One reviewer praised the aesthetics, saying, “The blue LED adds a nice touch, and it’s not an eyesore in my setup.” The portable build also makes it convenient for gamers on the go.
However, the drive’s plastic construction has raised some concerns about durability. While most users haven’t reported issues, one reviewer mentioned, “I had a Seagate 4TB on my PS4 that lasted for years, but I’m not sure if this one will hold up as well.”
4. Performance and Compatibility
The USB 3.0 connectivity ensures fast data transfer speeds, with one reviewer noting, “The transfer speed is super-fast, I can load up my games in no time.” The drive is also officially licensed by PlayStation, which gives users peace of mind about compatibility.
That said, the inability to play PS5 games directly from the external drive has been a significant drawback for some. One reviewer explained, “If I want to play a game that’s on the external drive, I have to move it back to the internal storage, which takes 10-15 minutes.” This limitation is due to PlayStation’s restrictions, not the drive itself, but it’s something to keep in mind.
Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?
The Seagate Game Drive for PS5 5TB External HDD is a solid choice for gamers looking to expand their storage without breaking the bank. Its massive 5TB capacity, easy setup, and sleek design make it a standout option. However, the inability to play PS5 games directly from the drive and occasional compatibility issues may be dealbreakers for some.
If you’re okay with transferring games back and forth and need a reliable, high-capacity storage solution, this drive is a great investment. But if you’re looking for a way to play PS5 games directly from an external drive, you might want to explore other options, such as an internal SSD.
Overall, the Seagate Game Drive for PS5 earns a 4 out of 5 stars from most users. It’s not perfect, but it’s a reliable and stylish way to keep your gaming library organized and accessible.

Comments from Amazon:
Works great right out of the package . Installed on my PS5 to add more storage . Easy install and no issues . Worth the money considering the amount of money spent on games .
Would give it 0 stars if possible. Claims to be for PS5 but won’t let me store any PS5 data on it. The whole purpose of this purchase was because I was running out of space on my PS5. Games are heavy nowadays and I needed extra storage to keep more games downloaded without the need to be deleting one game in order to play another. Needless to say, it was a waste of $160+ because the PS5 itself won’t recognize that the extended storage is connected to it and now I still have the same issue and -$160+…
I would have bought an internal HDD (the 2TB WD- Black) but I went ahead and bought this due to pricing and amount of storage. I now have over 20 games saved to this drive including all of my game captures. I have only one drawback: you're moving games back and forth. I'm not worried about corrupting saves as it seems pretty straightforward forward DO NOT UNPLUG from your PS5 (safe eject feature available when planning to store or move console). However, If I want to play a game that has 150 GB that is currently not on my internal drive, I have to move over (or previously delete) 150 GB worth of games to the Seagate and then copy the one game that I want to play. The copy process (moving the game back to the internal) takes a few minutes (10 -15) as you skip the "hard download" you would normally get from downloading a game as it is a local download and not a wireless download. The drive looks cool, isn't that much of an eye-sore as it is hidden from my view, and after much use, would pick this option again as it freed up a lot of space from my internal drive, which had a way higher price point then the drive along with less storage. Recommend it to anyone looking to boost their storage situation as we all know 1TB is NOT enough when new games average 80GB - 150GB a game.
I was getting so frustrated with my PS5's storage limitations, but this Seagate Game Drive has been a lifesaver. I can finally store all my games and still have room to spare! The design is sleek and compact, it's so easy to take with me on the go. The blue LED light is a nice touch, it adds a bit of flair to my gaming setup. And the fact that it's officially licensed by PlayStation means I know it's going to work seamlessly with my console. The transfer speed is super-fast, I can load up my games in no time. And with 5TB of storage, I can fit all my favorite games and still have room for new ones. I've got all my PS5 games on here, plus some PS4 games that I still like to play, and I've still got tons of space left over. The setup was a breeze, just plug it in and go! I didn't have to mess around with any complicated settings or anything. And the price? Unbeatable! I've seen other external hard drives that are way more expensive and don't offer nearly as much storage. If you're a serious gamer like me, you need this external hard drive in your life. Trust me, you won't regret it!
The only reason I give this a 4 of 5 is because of Playstations limitations for not being able to play ps5 games directly off the external drive. Otherwise it has decent speeds. And is really more storage than I'd ever need. I had a Segate 4tb on my ps4 that has lasted me for years. Good quality. I did return mine but only due to being gifted another one from a friend.
Works great, just like described. It’s very small which is a plus
The Seagate Game Drive for PS5 is a fantastic external HDD with plenty of storage space at 5TB. Setup is quick and easy, and the USB 3.0 connection ensures fast data transfers. The blue LED adds a nice touch, and it’s officially licensed, making it a reliable choice for expanding game storage. Note: Games cannot be played directly from the hard drive; they must be transferred back to the console to play. Highly recommend—5 stars!
