I've used many different storage servers and NAS appliances over the years, and this one takes the cake, especially for the price. It's so well designed, and it's incredibly accessible for people that want to tinker (it has a JTAG header)! The CPU beats my old 24 core Dell r610 rack server despite only 6 cores and using an order of magnitude less power. And it Does. The. Job. as a NAS. I can hit ~1GB/s real world speeds when using SMB to copy a file to the nvme disks. You can take out the stock 128gb boot disk and replace it with your own nvme also, giving you an extra slot (if you boot off a USB), but beware the internal slot is only PCIe 3.0 speeds compared to 4.0 for the 2 main ones. Google for "dxp4800_plus_lspci_fio_tests.txt" for nvme details and speedtest results. My current setup: 236TB installed, 128TB usable - TrueNAS scale - 2x 64GB samsung USB keys (as mirrored boot pool) - 3x 8TB Sabrent Rocket nvme drives in a stripe for 24TB of nvme storage @ 3500MB/s - 4x 20TB WD Red Pro hard drives in a mirrored striped array for 40TB usable @ 350MB/s - 1x 4TB External USB 4 SSD to use for L2ARC on the hard drive pool @ 550MB/s - 2x 32GB Silicon Power DDR5 RAM sticks for 64GB total RAM - 1x 10GBe link to my UDM router - 1x 2.5GBe fallback link to UDM router - JetKVM plugged into the HDMI and USB ports I'm thinking about cutting a hole in the case to make the 3rd nvme slot more accessible, but they used such thick aluminum that it's not worth it!
Good: Great design and hardware. Software is ok but getting better with each new update. Ugly: no support whatsoever. All engineers located in China and there is no direct line of communication. I was offered a support call over TeamViewer at 3AM!!!. If you need any help you are on your own.
The setup of the NAS was extremely easy. It was a well directed walkthrough as you took steps from power on to copying files to your new NAS. Decent speed. I was averaging 108MB/s on a Gb network. So just under the theoretical maximum. I upped the ram from 8GB to 16GB. Very easy to complete the change. There are a decent number of apps for use on the NAS at this time and they are adding more as time goes on. I have had no issues with stability or connection to multiple computers on my network. I am currently connected to 3 Macs that are using it as a TimeMachine backup drive. And I regularly connect to it for file sharing on those 3 Macs and 2 Windows PCs. 4x 8TB Seagate Ironwolf NAS (RAID 5)
I'm using this NAS with 4 12TB drives in a Raid 5 configuration, giving me roughly 32TB of reliable storage. I say reliable because each of the four drives is set up with reduntant storage, so that if it fails, it's data is already backed up on the other three. This sounds complicated, but the work is all handled by the software; you plug in the drives, attach it using Ethernet to you router, turn it on, and you're good to go. Install the app on a desktop, and it will find the NAS and walk you through the set up. Tis NAS has 4 bays for hard drives, and two for NVMe SSDs. The SSD can be used for additional high speed storage, or as a cache. I have a 1TB SSD configured as a cache. I've already set up the software to back up my desktop, and to act as a media server for the whole house. By downloading additional software, in my case, Jellyfin, I'm able to stream music and video to any device in the house, which is very nice. The specs of this NAS will support streaming and transcoding of 4k video, although I rarely store 4k files. Bluray is good enough for me, and takes up a quarter of the space. The software that comes with the NAS is decent, if a little basic, but you can easily install more robust applications as you need. BUt if you're just getting started with file servers, the included software is all you need to tart learning. Finally, this NAS is not the cheapest out there, but it is very flexible, fast, and feature rich. I don't expect to be replacing it any time soon. One important thing to know: spend the extra money on drives rated for use in a NAS. Unlike your desktop, the disks in a NAS are spinning almost all the time. NAS rated drives are designed for that kind of use; desktop drives are not.
The Nas worked for almost 2 weeks and it stopped syncing. Contacted customer support and received an email to send a pic of what was wrong with it, once sent customer support went silent. To bad I liked this unit. Going to buy a more reliable brand like synology. Update 2-17-1025 Customer support got back to me and told me that there was an update to the sync app or to reset the system. Once updated it worked for half an hour and the rest of the day it went dead. I wanted to love this unit and thought I may have gotten just gotten a bad one. I even offered to send this one back and go with the 8 bay one as the additional power would be helpful. Customer rep didn't even etartain it. Bought a TERRAMASTER F6-424 Max yesterday and it's in the process of setting up. Hopefully this unit works with no issues.
This unit is great for my use case. Does everything I need it to do for my media server and was easy to setup and get going. The 10 gig port makes file transfer incredibly fast. Build quality is great and the software seems straightforward and simple. My only concern is how I go about expanding my storage pool once I have it setup but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.
