Pros: What Customers Love
1. Noticeable Performance Boost
One of the most common praises for the Verbatim Vi550 SSD is the significant performance improvement it brings to older systems. Customers report faster boot times, quicker file transfers, and smoother multitasking. One user shared that replacing their old HDD with this SSD “bought the old laptop back to life,” while another mentioned that their Windows 10 PC now boots up in seconds.
2. Easy Installation
Many users appreciated how straightforward the installation process was. Whether you’re cloning your existing operating system or setting up a fresh install, the Verbatim Vi550 SSD is designed to be user-friendly. One reviewer even mentioned using a piece of cardboard to ensure a snug fit, which resolved their initial connection issues.
3. Great Value for Money
At its price point, the Verbatim Vi550 SSD offers excellent value. Customers noted that the performance and reliability are on par with more expensive brands. One user, who has been using Verbatim products since the 1980s, called it a “really good deal” and even purchased additional units for their kids’ PCs.
4. Durable and Reliable
The shock-resistant design and 3D NAND technology make this SSD a reliable choice for everyday use. Users highlighted its durability, with one reviewer stating that it’s a “quality product that performs exactly as specified.”
Cons: Areas for Improvement
1. Real-World Speeds Slightly Lower Than Advertised
While the SSD advertises speeds of up to 520 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write, some users reported real-world benchmarks closer to 400 MB/s. This is still a significant improvement over traditional HDDs, but it’s worth noting for those expecting peak performance at all times.
2. Compatibility Issues with Some Systems
A few users encountered issues with the SSD not being recognized by their systems. One reviewer resolved this by ensuring the terminal pins made a firm connection, but this could be a potential hassle for less tech-savvy users.
3. Lack of Included Mounting Hardware
If you’re replacing a mechanical hard drive in a desktop, you’ll need a rail kit or alternative mounting solution. Some users resorted to using double-sided tape, which, while effective, isn’t ideal for everyone.

Comments from Amazon:
I got this for an old Windows 10 PC that cannot be upgraded to Win 11 to setup dual boot to Linux. Works like a champ. I have bought 2 more to fix up my kids PCs also. A really good deal. (I have been using Verbatim disks since the 1980's - floppies of course back then.)
I replaced an HDD with this SSD in an old Dell laptop. I cloned the operating system (Windows 10) over to the SSD with no problem and the drive worked great when I booted the machine. Boot speed is greatly improved and file transfers are by far faster. It bought the old laptop back to life and well worth the low cost.
This drive has a real-world benchmark of 400 MB/s and some burst speeds into the listed top speed, closer to 380 MB/s if you're using this for coaching tasks. Better as a scratch drive on pitch film review or giving it to a player. Good for coaches that may prefer using a reliable storage drive to issue to players than a SD card out of a GoPro. As on any SSD reliability is the amount of empty space to handle TRIM. Overall the value per GB is similar to others, based on using different 120-240 GB drives they all peak to 400-440 MB/s and sustained writes are closer to 380 MB/s.
Be sure that the terminal pins in the computer touch firmly those on the hard drive. I used a piece on cardboard inside the slot to get a snug fit and good connection. I had an issue where my computer wasn't reading the new hard drive. Works great now.
The unit is exactly a quality product that performs exactly as specified. I will not hesitate to buy another one should the need arise.
I bought this to upgrade (and salvage) an older Dell desktop. It really does the trick. If you're replacing a mechanical hard drive you'll need the rail kit. I have seen some folks use 2 sided tape so I suppose that could be an option as well. I put Linux Mint on it and the old Dell purrs once again.
The Verbatim 256GB Vi550 SSD is an excellent upgrade for my laptop! It was easy to install, and the performance boost is noticeable. Faster boot times, quicker file transfers, and overall smoother performance. Great value for the price, and I’m really happy with this purchase.
