WD_BLACK 2TB SN7100 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Review: A Gamer’s Dream Come True?
If you’re a gamer or content creator looking for a high-performance storage solution, the WD_BLACK 2TB SN7100 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD might just be the upgrade you need. With blazing-fast speeds of up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write, this SSD is designed to handle the most demanding games and applications. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the details based on real customer experiences.
Pros and Cons: What Customers Are Saying
Performance: Lightning-Fast Speeds
The WD_BLACK SN7100 is a beast when it comes to performance. Customers rave about its blazing-fast read and write speeds, which significantly reduce load times and improve overall system responsiveness. One user mentioned that it’s the fastest 2230 drive they’ve ever tested, outperforming even their previous Sabrent SSD. Another customer highlighted how it keeps up with the PS5, making it a great choice for console gamers.
However, some users noted that while the speeds are impressive, they might not be as noticeable in everyday tasks compared to gaming or heavy workloads. But for gamers, this SSD is a game-changer.
Usability: Easy Installation and Setup
Installation is a breeze for most users. Many appreciated the automated SSD cloner that comes with the drive, making the transition from an old SSD seamless. One user mentioned that the drive was simple to unpack and install, though they deducted a star because the package didn’t include an M2 screw for mounting. This minor inconvenience was easily resolved with a temporary fix like electrical tape, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning to install it yourself.
For Steam Deck users, the M.2 2230 form factor is a perfect fit, and the installation process is straightforward. The drive’s compatibility with the latest PCIe Gen4 interfaces ensures that you can fully leverage your device’s hardware capabilities.
Durability and Reliability: Built to Last
Durability is a strong suit for the WD_BLACK SN7100. With a 2,400TBW endurance rating, this SSD is built to handle long gaming sessions and heavy workloads without breaking a sweat. Customers have praised its reliability, with one user stating they’ve purchased over 25 of these drives for new system builds without encountering any issues.
The drive also features advanced thermal management technologies, ensuring consistent performance even during extended use. One user mentioned that they’ve experienced no temperature problems even while playing demanding games like Rainbow Six and Sea of Thieves.
Capacity: More Than Enough Space
The 2TB capacity is a major selling point for this SSD. Gamers and content creators alike appreciate the ample space for storing large game libraries, updates, and DLCs. One user humorously noted that 1TB isn’t enough in today’s gaming world, recommending the 2TB+ option for those who can afford it.
For Steam Deck users, the increased storage allows for a broader selection of games to be installed simultaneously, making it a great choice for those who like to switch between different titles frequently.
Value for Money: A Worthy Investment
Many customers agree that the WD_BLACK SN7100 offers unmatched value for money. Its combination of high performance, durability, and generous storage capacity makes it a worthwhile investment for gamers and tech enthusiasts. One user even called it a “massive upgrade” over their previous SSD, highlighting the 35% performance boost over its predecessor.
However, some users wished it came with a heat sink pre-installed, especially for use in devices like the PS5. While this isn’t a deal-breaker, it’s something to consider if you’re planning to use the SSD in a high-performance environment.
Conclusion: Is the WD_BLACK SN7100 Worth It?
The WD_BLACK 2TB SN7100 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD is a powerhouse that delivers on its promises. With blazing-fast speeds, easy installation, and durable construction, it’s a top choice for gamers and content creators alike. While there are minor drawbacks like the lack of an M2 screw and heat sink, these are easily manageable and don’t detract from the overall experience.
If you’re looking to upgrade your gaming setup or need a reliable SSD for your Steam Deck or PS5, the WD_BLACK SN7100 is a highly recommended investment. It’s a 5-star product that offers exceptional performance and value for money, making it a must-have for anyone serious about gaming.

So far giving 5 stars cause it was an easy install on my PS5 and so far working good for me. The speed is keeping up good with PS5 and downloading large games to it is pretty decent. Just wish it came with a heat sink on it already
It works well and boots fast and reliably. Easy fit and will last a long time. 1tb seems to not be enough in the gaming world nowadays though haha. Maybe shell out a little more for the 2tb+ if you have it.
I have purchased several of these for new system builds and their performance is amazing. Purchased over 25 so far and haven't had a problem. The value for the quality is great as well.
I got the 500 GB, M.2 2280 configuration. The package arrived several days earlier than Amazon originally stated, which was a pleasant surprise. The drive was simple to unpack and install (for the most part; more on that later). After initiating the drive with Windows 11 Drive Manager, it worked perfectly. It runs at the advertised read and write speeds, and has the available capacity (+- necessary controlling software). I use it for gaming, and even for extended periods of playing relatively demanding games (Rainbow Six, Sea of Thieves, Genshin Impact, Risk of Rain, etc.), I have experience no temperature problems at all. Games boot quickly, and there have been no crashes or indications of drive failure. It has been a flawless experience. I deducted a star because the product packaging did NOT include an M2 screw for mounting. I had to order screws separately. If yours does not include a screw either, you can temporarily hold the SSD in place with a small strip of electrical tape, or keep it pressed down with other components like a heat spreader or laptop backplate (but get the screw eventually).
I've used this for my PS5 for a couple months now, and it's been a nice experience, has been a high quality SSD for me, I haven't experienced any slow boot times or anything like that, the performance has been really nice overall.
I was skeptical of the performance of this SSD, since I typically only buy the best, and have now multiple SN850x, so this sn770 felt like a downgrade. But it turned out to be the fast 2230 drive I have ever tested, and it has really good thermals. I'm running most of my games directly off it. It's very reliable , has unmatched value for money, and it comes with bunch of tools for speed testing. Installation was peice of cake, especially after using the automated SSD cloner. Overall, if you are able to use 2280 instead, then use those. If you must use 2230, then this SN770 is by far the best. It's massive upgrade over my previous sabrent ssd. If your device (like my GPD Win Max 2 2023) has only two slots, one is 2280, and other 2230, and you want the best, then for sure this sn770 2TB for the small 2230 slot, and pair it with 2TB SN850x or 990 PRO in bigger 2280 slot.
