WD_BLACK SN7100 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Review: A Gamer’s Dream Come True
When it comes to gaming, storage speed and capacity can make or break your experience. Enter the WD_BLACK 500GB SN7100 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD, a storage solution designed to elevate your gaming and content creation to the next level. With its PCIe Gen4 interface, TLC 3D NAND technology, and blazing-fast speeds of up to 6,800 MB/s, this SSD promises to deliver unmatched performance. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the details.
Pros and Cons: What Gamers Are Saying
Performance: Speed That Impresses
The WD_BLACK SN7100 is a speed demon, and gamers are loving it. One user mentioned that it’s the fastest 2230 drive they’ve ever tested, with excellent thermals even during extended gaming sessions. Another reviewer praised its 5,150 MB/s read and 4,900 MB/s write speeds, which drastically reduced load times on their Steam Deck. For PS5 users, the SSD has been a game-changer, with fast boot times and smooth performance even when downloading large games.
However, some users noted that the 500GB model might feel limiting for modern gaming, where games like Call of Duty or Red Dead Redemption 2 can take up over 100GB each. If you’re a heavy gamer, you might want to consider the 2TB model for ample storage.
Installation: Easy but Missing a Key Component
Most users found the installation process straightforward, especially with the help of the automated SSD cloner. However, a common complaint was the lack of an M2 screw in the packaging. One reviewer had to temporarily use electrical tape to secure the SSD until they could order screws separately. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, it’s an inconvenience that could have been avoided.
Compatibility: Perfect for Steam Deck and PS5
The SN7100 shines in its compatibility with devices like the Steam Deck and PS5. Its M.2 2230 form factor fits perfectly into the Steam Deck’s SSD slot, and its PCIe Gen4 interface ensures seamless integration with the PS5. One user even paired it with a 2TB SN850x in their GPD Win Max 2, creating a powerhouse setup for gaming on the go.
Durability and Reliability: Built to Last
WD_BLACK is known for its durable products, and the SN7100 is no exception. Users reported no overheating issues even during demanding gaming sessions. The 1,200TBW endurance rating (for the 2TB model) ensures long-lasting performance, making it a reliable choice for gamers and content creators alike.
Value for Money: A Solid Investment
Many users praised the SN7100 for its unmatched value for money. One reviewer, who had purchased over 25 units for system builds, highlighted its consistent performance and reliability. While it may not be the absolute top-tier SSD on the market, it offers a 35% performance boost over its predecessor, making it a worthy upgrade for most gamers.
Thermal Management: Cool Under Pressure
Thermal performance is a standout feature of the SN7100. Users reported no temperature issues even during extended gaming sessions with demanding titles like Rainbow Six Siege and Genshin Impact. This is a significant advantage for gamers who push their systems to the limit.
Software and Tools: A Gamer’s Best Friend
The WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only) is a handy tool for monitoring drive health and optimizing performance. Users appreciated the included tools for speed testing, which helped them get the most out of their SSD. However, some wished for better cross-platform support, as the dashboard is currently limited to Windows.
Capacity: Go Big or Go Home
While the 500GB model is sufficient for casual gamers, many users recommended opting for the 2TB version if your budget allows. With modern games requiring massive storage space, having extra room ensures you won’t run out of space anytime soon.
Conclusion: Is the WD_BLACK SN7100 Worth It?
The WD_BLACK SN7100 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD is a stellar choice for gamers and content creators looking for a high-performance, reliable storage solution. Its blazing-fast speeds, excellent thermal management, and durability make it a standout option in its price range. While the lack of an M2 screw and limited capacity of the 500GB model are minor drawbacks, they don’t detract from the overall value this SSD provides.
If you’re upgrading a Steam Deck, PS5, or even a high-performance gaming PC, the SN7100 is a worthy investment. For those who need more storage, the 2TB model is highly recommended. Overall, the WD_BLACK SN7100 delivers on its promises and earns its place as one of the best gaming SSDs on the market.
Final Verdict: 4.5/5 stars. A near-perfect SSD for gamers, with minor room for improvement in packaging and capacity options.

So far giving 5 stars cause it was an easy install on my PS5 and so far working good for me. The speed is keeping up good with PS5 and downloading large games to it is pretty decent. Just wish it came with a heat sink on it already
It works well and boots fast and reliably. Easy fit and will last a long time. 1tb seems to not be enough in the gaming world nowadays though haha. Maybe shell out a little more for the 2tb+ if you have it.
I have purchased several of these for new system builds and their performance is amazing. Purchased over 25 so far and haven't had a problem. The value for the quality is great as well.
I got the 500 GB, M.2 2280 configuration. The package arrived several days earlier than Amazon originally stated, which was a pleasant surprise. The drive was simple to unpack and install (for the most part; more on that later). After initiating the drive with Windows 11 Drive Manager, it worked perfectly. It runs at the advertised read and write speeds, and has the available capacity (+- necessary controlling software). I use it for gaming, and even for extended periods of playing relatively demanding games (Rainbow Six, Sea of Thieves, Genshin Impact, Risk of Rain, etc.), I have experience no temperature problems at all. Games boot quickly, and there have been no crashes or indications of drive failure. It has been a flawless experience. I deducted a star because the product packaging did NOT include an M2 screw for mounting. I had to order screws separately. If yours does not include a screw either, you can temporarily hold the SSD in place with a small strip of electrical tape, or keep it pressed down with other components like a heat spreader or laptop backplate (but get the screw eventually).
I've used this for my PS5 for a couple months now, and it's been a nice experience, has been a high quality SSD for me, I haven't experienced any slow boot times or anything like that, the performance has been really nice overall.
I was skeptical of the performance of this SSD, since I typically only buy the best, and have now multiple SN850x, so this sn770 felt like a downgrade. But it turned out to be the fast 2230 drive I have ever tested, and it has really good thermals. I'm running most of my games directly off it. It's very reliable , has unmatched value for money, and it comes with bunch of tools for speed testing. Installation was peice of cake, especially after using the automated SSD cloner. Overall, if you are able to use 2280 instead, then use those. If you must use 2230, then this SN770 is by far the best. It's massive upgrade over my previous sabrent ssd. If your device (like my GPD Win Max 2 2023) has only two slots, one is 2280, and other 2230, and you want the best, then for sure this sn770 2TB for the small 2230 slot, and pair it with 2TB SN850x or 990 PRO in bigger 2280 slot.
