With its 7200 RPM speed, 32MB cache, and SATA 6Gb/s interface, this 3.5-inch internal hard drive promises reliable performance for everyday computing tasks. Whether you're storing files, running applications, or gaming, this drive is designed to deliver.
But how does it hold up in real-world use? Let’s dive into the pros and cons based on customer experiences.
Pros and Cons: What Customers Are Saying
1. Performance and Speed
The WD Blue 500GB drive is praised for its noticeable performance boost, especially for users upgrading from older drives. One customer mentioned upgrading from a 320GB 16MB cache drive and immediately noticing faster data access and smoother operation. The 7200 RPM speed and 32MB cache make it a reliable choice for mainstream desktop use.
Pros:
- Fast Data Access
The 7200 RPM speed ensures quick file transfers and smooth performance. - Improved Cache
The 32MB cache reduces latency, making it ideal for multitasking.
Cons:
- Older Manufacturing Date
Some customers received drives manufactured in 2016 or 2017, which may raise concerns about longevity.
2. Ease of Installation and Use
For tech-savvy users, installing the WD Blue 500GB drive is a breeze. One reviewer shared their experience of installing it on a Windows Vista PC, formatting it, and getting it up and running without any issues. However, beginners might find the lack of documentation challenging.
Pros:
- Plug-and-Play
Works perfectly right out of the box for most users. - Compatibility
Works well with both Windows and Linux systems.
Cons:
- No Documentation
The drive comes with no instructions, which could be a hurdle for first-time users.
3. Durability and Longevity
Western Digital has a reputation for producing durable hard drives, and the WD Blue series is no exception. One customer noted that their previous WD drives lasted over ten years of continuous use before showing errors. However, some users reported receiving older drives (manufactured in 2016 or 2017), which might affect their lifespan.
Pros:
- Trusted Brand
Western Digital is known for reliability and durability. - Seller Warranty
Despite the expired manufacturer warranty, some sellers offer a one-year warranty.
Cons:
- Older Drives
Some customers received drives manufactured several years ago, which could impact performance over time.
4. Packaging and Condition
While the drive itself performs well, the packaging has been a point of contention. One reviewer mentioned that the drive was poorly packed in small padded mailers, which could pose a risk during shipping. However, the drives were still sealed in anti-static bags, ensuring they arrived in good condition.
Pros:
- Sealed and Protected
Drives come in anti-static bags to prevent damage.
Cons:
- Poor Packaging
The packaging could be more secure to protect the drive during transit.
5. Value for Money
The WD Blue 500GB drive offers excellent value for its price. Customers appreciate the affordability compared to local stores, where similar drives can cost twice as much. However, one user reported encountering UltraDMA CRC errors after just three weeks of use, which is concerning for a supposedly new drive.
Pros:
- Affordable
Great price for the performance and storage capacity. - Reliable Performance
Ideal for gaming, multimedia, and general storage needs.
Cons:
- Potential Quality Issues
Some users reported errors shortly after installation.
Conclusion: Is the WD Blue 500GB Worth It?
The WD Blue 500GB Desktop Hard Disk Drive is a reliable and affordable storage solution for mainstream desktop users. Its 7200 RPM speed, 32MB cache, and SATA 6Gb/s interface make it a solid choice for everyday computing tasks. However, the lack of documentation and occasional quality issues (such as older manufacturing dates or shipping errors) are worth considering.
Final Verdict: If you're comfortable with DIY installation and looking for a budget-friendly upgrade, the WD Blue 500GB is a great option. However, if you're a beginner or need a drive with a longer warranty, you might want to explore newer models or brands.
Overall, the WD Blue 500GB delivers on its promise of reliable performance, making it a trusted choice for upgrading your desktop storage.

Comments from Amazon:
This Hard Drive was manufactured SEVEN YEARS ago (March 2017) so any warranty from Western Digital has long since EXPIRED. The seller is providing a ONE YEAR warranty and I have no doubt that the drive will last far beyond that date. I used this drive to upgrade from a 320gb 16mb Cache drive and the increased performance is noticeable.
I build desk tops and sometimes run Windows and Linux , 500 g is plenty of room . Great value most local stores charge twice as much.
So this product is amazing, but if you dont know what you are doing then i recommend searching how to format a new harddrive. as this comes with 0 documentation(not the sellers fault WD does this) but overall this is amazing and i recommend getting this. Ive had it for a few days and have my games and projects it also came in great condition. I HIGHLY recommend
Works great !!
These are replacements for old drives. The previous drives, same type, ran for over ten years 24/7/365 before starting to generate errors. I expect the same from these. The packing was poor. The drives were packed in small padded mailers, then placed in a larger padded mailer. The manufacture dates were 2016 and 2017, so not "new". They were still sealed in their anti-static bags. I'll see how they hold up.
The price and the delivery for this HDD are great. I installed the HDD and reinstalled the OS three weeks ago and the system was operating well. I ran a HDDScan on the drive this morning and the report shows a warning for Num 199 UltraDMA CRC Errors. I was not expecting to find any errors after 3 weeks. I should have checked the HDD when it arrived.
I bought this WD Blue 500GB Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache 3.5 to add hard drive space to my Windows Vista P.C. That's right, WINDOWS Vista! It has worked perfectly right out of the box! I installed it, formatted it and it's working great!. I have trusted Western Digital hard drives for years now and would highly recommend any of their products. They install easily and work perfectly.
