Avolusion PRO-Z Series 12TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Review: A Mixed Bag of Performance and Reliability
The Avolusion PRO-Z Series 12TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is a high-capacity storage solution designed for Windows users who need ample space for backups, gaming, or media storage. With its 12TB capacity, 7200RPM enterprise-grade HDD, and USB 3.0 compatibility, this external hard drive promises fast transfer speeds and reliable performance. However, as with any product, real-world experiences vary. Let’s dive into the pros and cons based on customer feedback.
Pros: What Customers Love
1. Massive Storage Capacity
The 12TB storage capacity is undoubtedly the star feature of this drive. Customers rave about the sheer amount of space it provides, making it ideal for storing large files like movies, games, and production data. One user mentioned, "12 terabytes is phenomenal, especially for the price. You’d spend the same amount for less than half the storage with other brands like Seagate."
2. Fast Transfer Speeds
The USB 3.0 interface delivers impressive transfer speeds, with users reporting rates of 35-37 MB/s. This makes it a great choice for backing up large amounts of data quickly. A customer shared, "The transfer speed is very good. I backed up over 1TB of data in about 8 hours."
3. Plug-and-Play Simplicity
The plug-and-play functionality is a hit among users. The drive is pre-formatted for Windows, so it works right out of the box. One reviewer noted, "It’s simple and easy. Just plug it in, and my computer recognizes it immediately."
4. Sleek Design and Build Quality
The white PVC chassis and fanless design make the drive visually appealing and quiet during operation. Users appreciate the aesthetics, with one saying, "It looks really nice, not just a plain black box. It stands up nicely on its own and adds a touch of style to my setup."
Cons: Where It Falls Short
1. Durability Concerns
While many users praise the drive’s performance, some have reported hardware failures within a short period of use. One customer shared a heartbreaking experience: "My drive died after 8 months, and I lost 5TB of data. The hardware motors failed, and I had to send it for expensive repairs." Another user echoed this sentiment, stating, "It stopped working suddenly. I have a lot of important data that’s now lost."
2. Short Cables
The short USB and power cords are a common complaint. Users find them inconvenient, especially when setting up the drive in a workspace with shelves. One reviewer said, "The USB cord is only 1 foot long, and the power cord is too short. It’s frustrating when you can’t place the drive where you want it."
3. Mixed Reliability
While some users have had no issues, others have faced unexpected failures. A customer mentioned, "I read negative reviews after purchasing and got nervous. Thankfully, I haven’t had any problems so far, but it’s a gamble."
Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?
The Avolusion PRO-Z Series 12TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is a mixed bag. On one hand, it offers massive storage capacity, fast transfer speeds, and a sleek design that appeals to many users. On the other hand, durability issues and short cables detract from its overall value.
If you’re looking for a high-capacity external hard drive for short-term storage or backups, this could be a solid choice. However, if you’re storing critical data, you might want to consider a more reliable brand or invest in a RAID setup for added security.
Final Verdict:
- Pros
Massive storage, fast speeds, plug-and-play simplicity, sleek design. - Cons
Durability concerns, short cables, mixed reliability.
For the price, the Avolusion PRO-Z Series 12TB External Hard Drive is a decent option, but it’s not without risks. If you decide to purchase it, make sure to back up your data regularly and handle the drive with care.

Comments from Amazon:
I bought this to backup my backup drives from all portable and SSD Drives to a steady HDD. Turns out I trusted this device to store 5tb of data as long term. But kept my other 20tb of data on my SSD drives, but the low storage space wasn't worth it. Bought this 12tb drive to keep 2 to 3 SSD spaces available. I backed up 10tb and another 5TB onto my online storages(I have 20tb in total online space) but was limited in space(I do movies and porductions) usually a raid Drive is the best storage. But I have no space or time for that. Wanted convenient and fast storage options. Big mistake. My drive died 8 months into operations and I lost 5tb worth of data. I sent this off to a HDD disk repair service and they are charging me an arm and a leg. The drive suddenly stopped operations after a quick light on and failure to stay awake options as I was trying to back up the backup drive back onto my portable storage when I noticed it sound like failures and constantly turning off access via PC. I check health of all my devices daily. Daily, there was no Checksum errors of faulty hard drive, health was at 90% so I knew it was hardware motors that were soon to fail. I'm within warranty I'll check on the company for a refund. No need to replace it. It's done.
Easy install. Worked right out of the box. Transfer speed was very good. Great backup drive.
So i decided to take a chance on this hard drive, so far have had it for 1 day. STORAGE = 5 STARS. its great storage, 12 terabytes is phenomenal especially for the price, considering you would spend the same amount for less than half the storage for a Seagate. SPEED = 5 STARS. the transfer speed is 35-37 MB/s, which is pretty good i guess, im not an expert but i havent seen much difference in any of the other drives i have. EASE OF USE = 5 STARS. its simple and easy, just plug and play, my computer recognizes it right away and poof, thats it. ASTHETICS = 5 STARS. this looks really nice, its not just a solid black box, but actually looks decent, although it looks cheap, its just a couple of extra plastic pieces glued to the sides, its at least a little better than just a black box sitting there. although i wish there was some other color choices for it, thats the only downside. HARDWARE = 3 STARS. the only problem i have is with the cods for this, they are too short, the USB cord is 1 foot long, maybe 1.5 foot long, and the power cord is also short, for example, if you have a desk with shelves above the desk, the cords are not long enough to put this on your shelf above your laptop and connect it to your laptop sitting on your desk, at least a 3 foot USB cord would be better, and the power cord should be a bit longer too.
So far so good. I read the negative reviews after I purchased the 12 tb and then I got nervous. BUT, I have had none of those problems. I’ve used 5 tb of the storage so far and it worked right out of the box and didn’t make any noise. It looked slick, stands up nicely on its own, so far. I’m not familiar with Avolusion but I haven’t had any bad experience with this one, at all. For the price, the 10.9 tb of storage, after consumption, is awesome and working great.
The Avolusion PRO-Z Series 12TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive for Windows works relatively fast & is hastle free once the computer finds the device. Make sure your plugs are tight on both ends. I have over 1TB of data to back up & it took about 8 hours. I also like the on-off switch on the device. I keep it off when it is not backing up data. I switched to the Avolusion PRO-Z Series 12TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive for Windows because the Seagate ToolKit developed a bug & would not back-up after an update & had to buy a whole new back-up device. I was also locked out of back-ups due to the Seagate ToolKit bug. Highly inconvenient. Beware.
Stopped working. I have a lot of data that is lost and is important. Was working when I went to eat, came home and it doesn't get recognized.
This is a great drive, and is fast and has never caused me any issues.
