Pros and Cons: What Customers Are Saying
1. Storage Capacity: A Mixed Bag
The Avolusion PRO-5X is advertised as a 14TB drive, but customers have noted that the usable capacity is closer to 12.7TB after formatting. While this is standard for most hard drives due to file system overhead, some users felt the discrepancy should have been more clearly stated. One reviewer mentioned, “It’s not 14TB; it’s only 12.7TB. Should be advised as 13TB to avoid false advertising.” However, others appreciated the massive storage space, with one user stating, “I have about 8 of these and move large files from one to another all the time—a whole 14TB drive at a time.”
2. Performance: Fast and Reliable
The 7200RPM enterprise-grade HDD and USB 3.0 interface deliver impressive performance, especially for gaming and large file transfers. Customers praised the drive’s speed, with one user noting, “I’ve been using this for my Xbox, and it’s been a game-changer. Load times are faster, and I can store all my games without worrying about space.” Another reviewer highlighted its reliability for backups: “I always have a backup, sometimes a backup to my backups. These drives are perfect for that.”
However, some users mentioned that the drive produces mechanical spinning noises, which is typical for HDDs but might be a concern for those seeking silent operation. One customer compared it to their Seagate drives, saying, “No more or less noisy than my Seagate’s or other drives.”
3. Build Quality and Durability
The Avolusion PRO-5X features a sleek gunmetal grey chassis made of plastic/PVC. While it’s not marketed as data center-grade, customers found it durable enough for everyday use. One reviewer shared, “They’re mechanical drives, so I expect the sound of spinning drive noises. But I haven’t had any issues with them.” Another user appreciated the fan-less design, which ensures quiet operation during extended use.
4. Value for Money
One of the standout features of the Avolusion PRO-5X is its affordability. Compared to name-brand drives like Seagate, this drive offers similar performance at a lower price point. A satisfied customer said, “I got these because the Seagate’s and other name-brand drives were 20 to 50 percent more expensive. Definitely getting more as the need arises.” However, some users cautioned that it’s not a premium-grade drive, so it’s best suited for personal use rather than heavy-duty professional environments.
Final Verdict: Is the Avolusion PRO-5X Worth It?
The Avolusion PRO-5X (Grey) 14TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is a solid choice for anyone in need of affordable, high-capacity storage. Its 12.7TB usable space, fast transfer speeds, and compatibility with multiple platforms make it a versatile option for gamers, professionals, and casual users alike. While the mechanical spinning noises and slightly misleading capacity labeling might be minor drawbacks, the drive’s performance and value for money more than make up for these issues.
Strengths:
- Massive storage capacity
- Fast USB 3.0 transfer speeds
- Affordable compared to name-brand drives
- Durable and stylish design
Weaknesses:
- Usable capacity is less than advertised
- Mechanical spinning noises
- Not data center-grade
If you’re looking for a reliable external hard drive to store your games, back up important files, or expand your storage without breaking the bank, the Avolusion PRO-5X is a worthy contender. Just remember to keep a backup of your backups—because, as one user wisely noted, “Cheaper than a Data Recovery service.”

Comments from Amazon:
It’s not 14TB it’s only 12.7 TB should be advised as 13TB isn’t false advertising IMO
I have about 8 of these and move large files from one to another all the time, I mean a whole 14TB drive at a time. I always have a backup, sometimes a backup to my backups. I recommend you do to if your pictures and family videos are important, cheaper than a Data Recovery service. Don't think they are Data Center grade, but I have not had any issues with them. They are mechanical drives so I expect the sound of spinning drive noises. No more or less than my Seagate's or other drives. I got these because the Seagate's and other name brand drives were 20 to 50 percent more expensive. Definitely getting more as the need arises.
