MDD 2TB 64MB Cache 7200RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Desktop Hard Drive Review
If you're looking to upgrade your storage setup, the MDD 2TB 64MB Cache 7200RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5-inch Internal Desktop Hard Drive (MDD2000GSA6472) is a solid contender. With its 2TB storage capacity, 7200RPM rotation speed, and 64MB cache, this hard drive promises fast data access and reliable performance for a variety of applications, from desktop PCs to NAS systems and surveillance setups. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the details based on real customer experiences.
Pros and Cons: What Customers Are Saying
Quality and Performance
The MDD 2TB hard drive has received mixed reviews when it comes to quality and performance. On the positive side, many users appreciate its affordable price and decent performance for everyday tasks. One customer mentioned using it in their D-Link DNS-323 NAS unit, where it worked seamlessly after replacing older drives. They praised the drive for its sturdy packaging and easy installation, noting that it came with a 3-year warranty for added peace of mind.
However, some users reported inconsistent performance over time. One reviewer noted that the drive was incredibly loud during the first few days of use but eventually quieted down. Another user experienced issues with the drive randomly vanishing or taking a long time to show up on boot after about 60 days of use. While these issues didn’t completely ruin the experience, they do raise concerns about long-term reliability.
Usability and Installation
When it comes to usability, the MDD 2TB hard drive shines. Many customers found it super easy to install, especially in desktop setups. One user highlighted that the drive required no BIOS setup—simply plug it in, boot your system, and it’s ready to go as a new drive letter. This makes it an excellent choice for those who aren’t tech-savvy or don’t want to deal with complicated configurations.
That said, it’s worth noting that this is a bare drive, meaning it doesn’t come with screws, cables, or accessories. While this isn’t a dealbreaker for most, it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning to use it in a custom setup or external enclosure.
Durability and Longevity
Durability is a mixed bag for this drive. Some users, like the one who replaced their 17-year-old drives, are optimistic about its longevity, especially given the 3-year warranty. Others, however, have expressed concerns about its long-term reliability. For instance, the reviewer who experienced the drive randomly vanishing after 60 days of use found the performance to be "meh" at best. If you’re using this drive for low-value bulk storage, it might be a good fit, but for mission-critical applications, you might want to consider a more reliable option.
Noise and Heat Generation
Noise levels are another point of contention. While some users found the drive to be nice and quiet, others reported that it was incredibly loud during the initial days of use. Fortunately, the noise seemed to settle down over time for most users. As for heat generation, there were no significant complaints, which is a plus for those planning to use the drive in 24/7 applications like surveillance systems or media servers.
Conclusion: Is the MDD 2TB Hard Drive Worth It?
The MDD 2TB 64MB Cache 7200RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Desktop Hard Drive offers a lot of value for its price. It’s affordable, easy to install, and provides ample storage space for everyday use. However, its inconsistent performance and noise issues might be a dealbreaker for some, especially if you’re looking for a drive for mission-critical applications.
Final Verdict:
- Pros
Affordable, easy to install, decent performance for everyday tasks, 3-year warranty. - Cons
Inconsistent long-term reliability, noisy during initial use, bare drive (no accessories included).
If you’re on a budget and need a drive for low-value bulk storage or casual use, the MDD 2TB hard drive is a solid choice. However, for more demanding applications, you might want to explore other options with better track records for reliability.

Comments from Amazon:
This is a great product with a great price!!!
The drive was *Incredibly loud* for a few days and then settled down. using it for low value bulk storage so i'm not overly concerned if it kicks it, and the price was good so hey. Edit: now about 60 days after purchase, drive randomly vanishing / taking a long time to show up on boot. fifty cents a day is meh.
Product was affordable and it was enough room for my to add my games to.
This is a great addition to your desktop. Super easy to install. Basically, put it into a disk bay on your desktop. Assuming that you have all the wires and trays of course. I didn't but it was easy to fine the connector here on amazon. There is no bios setup or any type of setup. You install it, boot your system and it's there as a new drive letter.
It works. You get what you pay for.
This drive fit perfectly. It is nice and quiet. And was already properly formatted for windows
I purchased (2) of these 2TB Drives to replace two very old drives in my very old still working D-Link DNS-323 NAS unit. The drives came in individual small sturdy boxes well packaged protection plastic end caps and in the standard sealed plastic anti static bags. Paper work in the box for 3 yr. warrany, a reminder to to format the drives to use. So far they are working as needed in my NAS for a total investment of $60. The old drives were 32MB Cache 1TB that lived well beyond their expected lifetime (17 yrs). They still work but I don't trust them anymore. Who knows how long these will last? A great value in Hard Drives and a long warranty!
