MDD 10TB Enterprise Hard Drive Review: A Mixed Bag of Performance and Reliability

The MDD (MDD10TSATA25672E) 10TB 7200 RPM 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5-inch Enterprise Hard Drive (Renewed) is a high-capacity storage solution designed for enterprise environments. With its 10TB storage capacity, 7200 RPM speed, and 256MB cache, this drive promises to deliver exceptional performance for data centers, cloud storage, and large-scale applications. However, customer reviews reveal a mixed experience, with some praising its performance and others reporting significant issues. Let’s dive into the details.

Pros and Cons: A Detailed Breakdown

1. Performance and Speed

Pros:

  • Fast Data Transfer: Many users have reported impressive read/write speeds, with one reviewer noting speeds of around 150 MB/s using the Black Magic disk speed test. This makes it suitable for tasks like Time Machine backups and general storage needs.
  • Quiet Operation: Several customers appreciated the drive’s quiet operation, which is a significant advantage for environments where noise levels matter, such as home offices or small data centers.

Cons:

  • Inconsistent Performance: While some users experienced excellent performance, others reported that the drive failed to power on or was not recognized by their systems. One reviewer mentioned that the drive didn’t show up in BIOS or disk management, despite testing multiple SATA cables and ports.

2. Build Quality and Durability

Pros:

  • Enterprise-Grade Design: The drive is built for 24/7 operation, with a Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of 2.0 million hours and an Annualized Failure Rate (AFR) of 0.44%. This makes it a reliable choice for demanding workloads.
  • Secure Packaging: Customers praised the drive’s packaging, which included a sealed anti-static bag and a desiccant packet to protect against moisture and static damage.

Cons:

  • Defective Units: Several users received drives that were dead on arrival (DOA). One reviewer stated that the drive never powered on, while another mentioned that two separate units failed to function. These issues raise concerns about the quality control process for renewed drives.

3. Compatibility and Usability

Pros:

  • Wide Compatibility: The drive is compatible with desktop PCs, Macs, RAID systems, NAS devices, and surveillance systems. One user confirmed that it worked perfectly with their Synology NAS, highlighting its versatility.
  • Power-Saving Features: Some users noted that the drive’s enterprise-grade power-saving features could be bypassed using a molex-to-SATA power adapter, making it compatible with desktop systems.

Cons:

  • Power-Saving Issues: While the power-saving features are a plus for enterprise environments, they can cause compatibility issues with standard desktop setups. One reviewer suggested using a molex-to-SATA adapter to resolve this problem, but this adds an extra step for users.

4. Value for Money

Pros:

  • Affordable Renewed Option: As a renewed product, the MDD 10TB drive offers a cost-effective solution for users who need high-capacity storage without breaking the bank.
  • Fast Shipping: Several customers appreciated the quick delivery, which is a testament to the efficiency of the seller and Amazon’s shipping network.

Cons:

  • Risk of Defective Units: The recurring issue of DOA drives makes this product a gamble. One reviewer explicitly warned others to avoid this drive until more reliable reviews are available, citing multiple failed attempts to get the drive working.

Conclusion: Is the MDD 10TB Enterprise Hard Drive Worth It?

The MDD 10TB Enterprise Hard Drive offers a compelling mix of high capacity, fast performance, and enterprise-grade reliability. For users who receive a functioning unit, it’s an excellent choice for demanding applications like data centers, NAS setups, and backups. However, the risk of receiving a defective drive is a significant drawback, as highlighted by multiple customer reviews.

Final Verdict: If you’re willing to take a chance on a renewed product and have the patience to troubleshoot potential power-saving or compatibility issues, the MDD 10TB drive could be a great addition to your storage setup. However, if reliability is your top priority, you might want to consider a new drive or explore other options with more consistent reviews.

Comments from Amazon:

There was no noise indicating that it was even powered on in the first place

The product arrived dead and never powered on and I could confirm that the Sata ports and power worked as they were the same cables that were used for a separate drive. There was no noise indicating that it was even powered on in the first place. Drive never showed up in BIOS or disk management. The only good thing I can even say about this drive is the fact that it was delivered quickly but that's more of a kudos to amazon for the shipping speed. I would recommend avoiding this drive until further reviews come in.

Very quiet running which is important since I use it for my Mac Time Machine hourly backups

Nicely packed in a sealed anti-static bag with desiccant packet. Very quiet running which is important since I use it for my Mac Time Machine hourly backups. Getting about 150 MB/s R/W speed with Black Magic disk speed test. Perfectly fine for what I'm using it for.

 its silence and Fast

it works with synology perfectly. its silence and Fast.

Tried multiple SATA cables and ports with nothing working

Tried two times and neither drive did anything. Tried multiple SATA cables and ports with nothing working. Tested other hard drives on the same cables with no issues, but nothing when I use this product. Not even BIOS would read it. It's quite disappointing since it was a good deal.

If your having issues getting drive powered on it is most probable that since these are enterprise the have power saving features built in which wont work with most desktops unless you power them with a molex to sata power adapter which bypasses the power saving feature by only supllying power to running the drive.

Este disco duro (10 TB) llegó a tiempo pero esta defectuoso, no sirve.

 Be careful

Dont buy and dont waste your time, they are selling it faulty. Be careful. The good thing, well packed and looks new
