Seagate 14TB HDD Exos X14 Review: A Powerhouse for Enterprise Storage Needs

Item was even better than the seller advertised. New, no writes, full 5 year warranty through Seagate, next day delivery and great customer service! I was initially worried that it was recertified drive as they mistakenly put an image of one for the order details when you go to check on the order for delivery. But after a few emails where they were very helpful in trying to assure me it was a brand new factory version of the Exos 14TB drive, including offering a discount above the full price, and after the 1 day delivery. I then was able to put the drive in to a Thunderbolt Drive Dock and read the S.M.A.R.T. information showing the drive had not been used and was brand new. The serial number on the drive sticker matched the one you can read getting info on the drive in the system profiler, and it was ready to go after a quick reformat. A visit to the Seagate website and i was able to register the drive for the full 5 year warranty. Technically with a bonus 2 months as it's good till Oct 2025! It's a very large SATA HDD that's quite fast in testing as well. I was able to reach about 258 MB/s using the OTTO disk benchmarking tool. Really nothing bad to say and only good things to report on every front. I'd recommend Price Master Jay and will shop with them again to purchase 4 more 14TB Exos drives for a 4 bay storage enclosure to be used for RAID, JBOD, or 4 individual disks. At these prices i'll save almost the full price of the same drive. The only thing i'm not sure of when i purchase another one is if the Exos 14TB will be another x16 Exos 14TB. The product description has it advertised as an x14 14TB. When i said the item was even better than the seller advertised this is what i meant. That was a very nice surprise! Glen Allan, Phoenix

This high-quality product supports solid performance almost as good as SSD-based USB3 for large file transfer, with a price-per-TB only 1/5 of SSD. The unit received is actually a Seagate Exos X 16 14TB HDD (ST14000NM001 G) instead of Exos X 14 14TB HDD (ST14000NM001 8). The two sub-series are almost identical except that the former has 9 disks and 16 heads as per the specs and datasheet at Seagate.com, whereas the latter has 8 and 16. The dozen or so disks and disk heads plus 250MB caching translate to higher reliability and much better performance than its counterparts with fewer disks and heads, let alone non-externally-powered internal 2.5” HDDs, or external 2.5” & 3.5” HDDs where one is hard pressed to find any performance specs at all. The measured write speed was about 240 MB/s during large file transfer, comparable to that of (non-NVMe) SSD-based USB3 that tends to overhead quickly after just tens of GB transfer. This standard model is not of SED (Self-Encrypting Disk) type so data security, if required, would rely on software applications such as EFS (Encrypting File System) on Windows Pro, where the on-the-fly encryption can slow down the transfer speed somewhat. However, if the content being copied from is on another HDD of lesser quality (e.g. a read speed of 180 MB/s or lower instead of 240), the end-to-end limiting factor would be the read speed of that disk instead of SED. There was a newer firmware version (FM 3.0) available at Seagate.com for download, more recent than the pre-installed FM 2.0 on the HDD that had a manufacturing date of late Jan 2020.

Hundreds cheaper than the NAS Drives I was looking at. Nice Warranty. I just needed a bigger drive for all my videos, music, and pictures. Like a earlier review said, you’ll only get about 12.7TB. Not a big deal to me with a drive this size. So far it seems to be running good, if that changes I’ll update. Update: It’s really noisy. It almost makes you wonder if something is wrong with it. Did my scans, and everything says it’s still good, but I’m not going to risk it. I ended up replacing it with a quiet Western Digital 14TB Ultrastar.

There not nothing bad I can say about this drive. It might be seem expensive when you look at cost(still cheaper than all the other drives of 14TB capacity. But this drive is quiet, low power, rated to last 2.5x longer than other hdds plus 5 year warranty. Also I got a solid 260MB/s write from this drive when transferring multiple TBs worth of data over. A HDD speed which I am not accustomed to. Will be buying much much more of this.

I've used Seagate IronWolf and Western Digital Red drives previously in older Synology NAS devices. I recently purchased a Synology 1819+ system and decided to try the Exos line of drives after comparing the specs and cost against the IronWolfs. With a much higher Mean Time Between Failure rate, longer warranty, and lower cost, the 14TB Exos was an easy choice. They've been running in the Synology 1819+ for 3 months, with zero problems. They run about 5% cooler than the IronWolf drives, which is quite nice. The only negative thing I really have to say about the Exos is that they are noticeably louder than the IronWolf drives.

It’s great to have 14 TB in one drive, but the seeking is very loud to my ears. Waaaay louder than non-helium drives.
